H. G. (Herbert George) Wells (1866-1946)
The novelist invented a game called "Little Wars" that was inspired
by a similar game Robert Louis Stevenson had invented and described in
a magazine article. Complete with over 200 soldiers, hundreds of props,
including little cannon that could fire wooden shells, the game was compulsory
for anyone who arrived at the Wells's house while Wells was playing. "Sit
down and keep your mouth shut," the novelist would order and assign the
visitor to one side or another for a session that could last as long as
10 hours.
